I was commissioned to design and illustrate the movie poster for The Great Fortune, a short film about a 16 year-old Japanese American girl who helps her mother run a daifuku* stand and is learning to accept her cultural identity.

*daifuku is a Japanese dessert that is made of red bean and strawberry wrapped in mochi

The Great Fortune

Working from my initial sketch, I used a limited color palette and used stills from the movie’s shoot for reference.

I read the script and began this drawing simultaneously with the movie being edited and put together.

The bottom portion is left minimal for the director to add credentials.
